Madhuri Rao - Biography

Hello, and welcome to my portfolio!

I am an artist, researcher and pedagogue based out of Bangalore. I am differently-abled and identify as queer.

My current research questions the future of art practice and the evolving conditions of lived experience under the pervasive influence of mediating technologies. My motivation and drive to conduct research and arrive at an understanding arises out of my personal experiences, having recognised the need for representation and voice within contexts of body difference and diverse abilities. My new media practice focuses on the study of experience, both as a context for making and the reception of artworks. Interested in the embodiment of artistic thought in socio-cultural environments, I am particularly drawn towards innovative methods of telling irrespective of the genre, and any work that catches my attention for its thought-provoking perspectives. Through my philosopical and artistic explorations, I investigate the performative nature of sound, its demands on durational engagement and its transmission to a viewer-participant, so as to herald divergent modes of sensory reception other than the ocular.

I have had over twelve years of work experience in the arts, and I am currently an Adjunct Faculty at Vidyashilp University teaching studio courses in design and art practice. I was formerly a faculty member of Srishti-Manipal Institute of Art Design and Technology and was previously an Assistant Curator for both the National Gallery of Modern Art in Bengaluru and the Bhau Daji Lad Museum in Mumbai.
